Description

Early 20th century carved wood Maori Patu/Patau tribal club,c1930. Traditionally fashioned in stone or whalebone these are close combat striking clubs and Patu translates as 'strike, hit, kill, beat, subdue etc'. This is a good quality copy of early examples probably for ceremonial use and is beautifully decorated with traditional scrolling decoration and Tiki type figures along the edge of the main body and handle. The wood has taken on great colour following many years of handling. Overall condition is good with only minor surface wear, scuffs, marks mainly around the edges etc. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me with any questions or if you would like to view the item.
