Description

Stunning large, heavy late 18th/early 19th century Indian statue of the Hindu deity Nandi, c1800. Beautifully carved (I assume in hardwood given the weight) and painted, this is an impressive and highly decorative piece, most probably used in a temple or for ceremonial purposes. The main body appears to be carved from one piece of wood with the tail, ears, bell decoration and other embellishments added. It stands proudly on a simple raised plinth/base. It has taken on a great colour with just the right amount of wear/fading to the wood and paint. Overall condition is good in line with age and use. There are minor losses to the paint/flaking and to the wood with a bell and a small edge to one ear missing, minor cracking etc. All exactly as you would expect from an example of this age.
