Description

Early 20th century carved wood Maori Patu/Patau club,c1920. Traditionally fashioned in stone or whalebone these are close combat striking clubs and Patu translates as 'strike, hit, kill, beat, subdue etc'. This is a good quality copy of early examples probably for ceremonial use and is beautifully decorated with traditional scrolling decoration. The wood has taken on great colour following many years of handling.
