Fine large African tribal bronze shrine fertility statue, c 1920.From the Yoruba Ogboni tribal area (Nigeria), an area noted for the quality of its craftsmanship ,this is a good quality casting with fine detail and decoration and has taken on great colour/patina following years of handling. The figure is 'Onile' the female fertility force of the Ogboni society. As the primary giver of life she displays her genetalia and has the characteristic cicatrisation patterns on her back, cheeks and forehead. The bird decoration signifies she possesses spiritual powers. Overall condition is good in line with age and use.
