Extremely rare piece of Roman military history.
Ninth legion clay brick found in Leon - Spain. LEG 1X HISPAN - The Spanish Legion.
The mystery of this legion has been debated for many years with no concrete conclusion.
One of the oldest units in the imperial army, serving Julius Caesar in 58BC.
In 43 AD they came across to Britain and suffered many losses in the revolt of the Celtic queen Boudicca, extra men were shipped in from the German provinces to bolster the numbers.
There is some evidence a detachment was sent to the Netherlands but what happened to the rest of the Ninth in Britain? Did they remain or get transferred back to Europe?
