Description

A largish fragment of Roman military tile, more likely from a roof. Showing the Numerals 1XX1, I believe this is the 20th Legion. Normally shown with XX but it was normal for the numerals to be changed around. 1 before the X = 9 and X1 = 11. If anyone has another theory please let me know.
After the heavy defeat of Varus the legion were called back to Germania, some years later in 43 AD they came over to Britain under Claudius and fought the famous Celtic Queen Boudicca at Watling Street.
A very historical display piece in orange clay, the label on the back is faded and in German. I can see the numbers 69 so possibly found in 1969?
Size of tile - l3.5cm wide x 10.5xm and 3cm deep. Height on stand - 20.7cm
