1 Fine Art English 20th Century Marine Seascape Oil Painting WW2 Sea Battle "HMS Battleship Hood The Last Moments" Signed R.A.Mew.
Subject famous WW2 Marine sea battle "The Last Moments" of the Royal Naval HMS Hood ship, just before she blew it and sunk in the Battle of the Denmark Strait on the 24th May 1941.
Your focus is first drawn towards the centre where you can see the main big guns firing furiously from her turrets on deck, with thick smoke rising from the gun fire. To the right and to the left are shell explosions on the sea causing big splashes. On relatively choppy seas. In the distant background to the left you can see flashes of fire on the horizon which is shots coming in from the Bismarck. Overhead at the top dark smoke filled sky, just below is blue sky in the distance.

HMS Hood pennant number 51 was the lead ship of her class of four battlecruisers built for the Royal Navy during World War I. Already under construction when the Battle of Jutland occurred in mid-1916, that battle revealed serious flaws in her design despite drastic revisions before she was completed four years later.
Hood remained the largest warship in the world for 20 years after her commissioning, and her prestige was reflected in her nickname, "The Mighty Hood"
In May 1941, Hood and the battleship Prince of Wales were ordered to intercept the German battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, which were en route to the Atlantic, where they were to attack convoys. On 24 May 1941, early in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Hood was struck by several German shells, exploded, and sank within 3 minutes, with the loss of all but three of her crew.
