Description

Mid-18th-Century Naval Portrait — Captain Sir Gamaliel Nightingale (1731–1791)
Attributed to John Simmons the Younger | Ex Bonhams 2024
A fine and historically significant mid-18th-century British oil portrait depicting Captain Sir Gamaliel Nightingale, 9th Baronet (1731–1791), attributed to the West Country portraitist John Simmons the Younger (1715–1780). This half-length Georgian naval portrait combines documented Royal Navy service, hereditary lineage, geographic legacy and public auction provenance, offering strong appeal to collectors of maritime art, British portraiture and country-house interiors.
The Portrait
The sitter is shown in formal Royal Navy uniform, wearing a deep navy-blue coat with white facings and gilt detailing. The composition is balanced and restrained, typical of quality Georgian portraiture circa 1760.
The artist employs:
Refined modelling of flesh tones with subtle tonal transitions
Confident handling of fabric and metallic highlights
A muted, atmospheric background that enhances the sitter’s presence
A controlled palette of navy, white and gold that emphasises rank and authority
The painting is executed in oil on canvas and retains strong visual impact, with particularly well-preserved colour in the uniform passages.
Attribution: John Simmons the Younger (1715–1780)
The portrait is attributed to John Simmons the Younger of Nailsea, a mid-18th-century British portrait painter active in the Somerset and Bristol region. Simmons produced commissioned portraits for members of the gentry and professional classes, including naval sitters.
The attribution is based upon:
Stylistic comparison with recorded works attributed to Simmons
The treatment of facial modelling and costume
Regional context consistent with the artist’s known practice
Public sale provenance through Bonhams (February 2024)
The painting is unsigned, which is not uncommon in provincial British portraiture of this period. Further technical analysis (UV light examination, pigment testing or infrared imaging) may be undertaken if required for institutional acquisition.
The Sitter: Captain Sir Gamaliel Nightingale
Born at Kneesworth Hall, Cambridgeshire, on 15 February 1731, Sir Gamaliel Nightingale belonged to an established English baronet family whose title dated to 1628.
He entered the Royal Naval Academy in 1744 and progressed through a distinguished 35-year naval career. His service included:
HMS Rippon
HMS Porcupine
HMS Hind
HMS Falcon
HMS Wager
Senior lieutenant aboard HMS Prince George (80 guns) and HMS Dublin (74 guns)
He later commanded HMS Badger and HMS Vengeance. On 13 March 1761, while commanding Vengeance, he captured the 44-gun French privateer Entreprenant near Land’s End during the Seven Years’ War — an engagement demonstrating his tactical capability in independent command.
He also commanded HMS Flora and retired on half-pay in 1779.
Nightingale Island
During service in the South Atlantic in 1760, Nightingale charted or observed a volcanic island within the Tristan da Cunha group. The island subsequently bore his name: Nightingale Island. Today it remains an important ecological site, adding a geographic and exploratory dimension to the sitter’s historical significance.
Provenance
Bonhams, London — Old Master & British Paintings Sale, February 2024, Lot 9
Private European Collection (since at least circa 1990)
Bonhams lot label present on the verso
The documented public sale history enhances both market transparency and collectability.
Archival records from Cambridgeshire, including the 1768 Chesterton Terrier, reference estate transactions involving Captain Nightingale, reinforcing sitter identification and regional historical context.
Frame
The portrait is housed in a substantial giltwood frame in late-Georgian / early-Regency taste, featuring acanthus leaf ornament and egg-and-dart detailing. The warm gilded surface complements the tonal range of the painting and is structurally sound with expected age-related wear.

Collecting Significance
This Georgian naval portrait offers multiple layers of appeal:
Named Royal Navy officer with documented wartime action
Baronetcy lineage dating to 1628
Geographic legacy via Nightingale Island
Public Bonhams provenance (2024)
Period giltwood frame suitable for country-house or formal interior display
It will suit collectors of 18th-century oil paintings, maritime art, British military history, or buyers furnishing historic interiors.
