Scottish Oil Painting, Trout Fishing Culroy Burn

Description
Antique Scottish Oil Painting, Trout Fishing Still Life with Creel by James B. Russell, c.1914A fine Edwardian Scottish sporting oil painting depicting two freshly caught brown trout spilled from a wicker creel onto the grassy bank of a burn. Painted circa 1914 and attributed to Scottish artist James B. Russell, this is a highly decorative and collectable example of British angling art, ideal for country house interiors, sporting lodges, libraries, and traditional settings.
Description
The composition places the trout diagonally across the foreground, creating depth and movement. The fish are carefully observed, with silvery bellies, spotted flanks, and subtle tonal modelling that gives a realistic sense of sheen and weight. The creel, riverbank, and wooded background are painted more loosely, providing atmosphere while keeping the focus on the catch. A shaded stream and tree-lined bank complete the classic Scottish sporting scene.
Subject and Location
The picture is associated with Culroy Burn, Ayrshire, a tributary of the River Doon near Minishant in South Ayrshire, long known for trout fishing. The named Scottish location adds authenticity and regional interest for collectors of sporting pictures and Scottish landscape subjects.
Artist
James B. Russell (1867–1956) was born in Edinburgh and worked within a family tradition of specialist fish painting. His father, John Bucknell Russell, was an established carver and painter of salmon producing accurate life-size fish works for sporting patrons. James continued this tradition into the early 20th century, combining realistic fish depiction with more atmospheric landscape handling.
Signature
Signed “J. B. Russell” in red to the lower corner.
Frame
Housed in a moulded gilt frame with the trade label Weir & Clyde, Carvers & Gilders, 463 Eglinton Street, Glasgow, supporting early 20th-century Glasgow framing and adding period character.
Provenance
Private collection, UK.
Weir & Clyde gilder’s label to the reverse.
