The owner named in the inscription, Mr H. D. Deane, is associated with Horace Deane-Drummond, a figure within the planter elite of British Ceylon. Hugh Blyth-Millar (1862–1915) was a Scottish sporting artist working in the late Victorian tradition of owner-commissioned equestrian portraiture. Condition
Professionally restored by a conservator based at the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum (December 2025): structural stabilisation and surface treatment with some recent and historic paint touch ups associated with older repair patches verso. Structurally stable paint layer secure presents cleanly and attractively. Craquelure and stretcher lines visible as expected with age. Recently reframed ready for immediate display.
