Oil on canvas, signed and dated, in gilt frame
A large and dramatic oil painting by Edith Alice Simkins, signed “E. A. Simkins” and dated 1939, depicting riderless horses in full flight through smoke and dust. Rather than a heroic cavalry charge, the artist focuses on the aftermath: empty saddles and abandoned kit give the scene a powerful sense of urgency, loss and disarray. The central chestnut horse is strongly modelled with carefully observed tack, while a rearing white horse to the right heightens the movement and drama.
The subject is believed (from visual interpretation) to evoke the early Western Front period of WWI and the Great Retreat era this is offered as contextual interest only, as the painting is not inscribed to a specific battle.
Simkins is documented as a member/exhibitor of the Ipswich Art Club (1935–1949), and records note she exhibited an oil titled “After the Charge” in 1943, supporting the alternate historic title.

Making Payment
Goods can be bought by either International bank wire transfer or domestic BACS payment we can email you an invoice together with our banking instructions. Cash upon collection is also accepted. Shipping is with insurance cover. Import duty and taxes payable by the buyer please enquire if you need any assistance. Delivery time is usually within 2 weeks for International and 1 week for domestic shipping approximate. It can be faster depending upon the size and weight of the item(s) that you ordering from us. You are also welcome to arrange for your own courier to collect as long as we have received full cleared bank transfer payment.

Delivery by parcel courier within the UK Mainland will be used for all smalls, paintings & all furniture items allow between 2 to 5 working days delivery time. Online tracking can be provided. ConditionCondition Good, honest condition commensurate with age. The surface shows areas of paint loss/flaking, scuffs, foxing/staining and surface scratches in places.
