Title “Wiscombe Park Steel Sailing Ship Enroute to Australia” C1900 built by John Blumer & Co For G Windram & Co of Liverpool After William Huggins.
Circa 1900 beginning of the 20th century end of Victorian era.
Unsigned by English school artist.
Set in a recent Larson Juhl moulded traditional frame which enhances this work further.
A delightful display size with the frame being 105.5 cm wide and 74.5 cm high.
Subject seascape marine view of the known three masted steel general cargo ship Wiscombe Park, sailing in a brisk wind towards the right in rather choppy high seas in full side profile view set during the morning. With the majority of the sails hoisted & ensign flags flying high, with the union Jack ensign also flying at the stern. With crew figures out on deck, the name of the ship Wiscombe Park is visible on the bow. Top of the cenytral mast is a red ensign flag showing the ship owners name in reverse. In the distance on the right flank you can view another sailing ship. On the left flank another sailing ship, above in relative light clear blue sky with some white scattered clouds.
In our opinion this is exceptional marine masterpiece.
The Wiscombe Park was a three-masted square rigger general cargo carrying steel sailing vessel ship, launched on 4th November 1891 and completed in January 1892 by the builders John Blumer & Co for the first owners G. Windram and Co. of Liverpool, built in Sunderland yard no 117 north dock. It was unusual for its time because it had three masts, while most large sailing ships had four. The Wiscombe Park was a steel ship that weighed 2,228 tons. Its length was 281 ft with a breadth of 42.2 ft and depth 4ft. The port of register was Liverpool. She was sold, in 1911, to Chadwick Wainwright and Co of Liverpool. And sold again, in 1919, to Bureau Freres & Baillegeau of Nantes, France & renamed Edouard Bureau. It lay idle for a while. In 1923, the vessel was sold to Vinnen Gedbruder, of Hamburg, Germany, fitted out as a sail training ship & renamed Greif. The ship participated in one or two of the Australian Grain races in the mid 1920’s.
In 1927, the vessel was battered rounding Cape Horn en-route from Port Pirie, S. Australia, to England, with a cargo of wheat. On 7th June 1927, the vessel arrived at Falmouth, Cornwall, but was ordered to Belfast, Northern Ireland, to discharge its cargo. The vessel grounded on Twin Rocks, Irish Sea, but was towed clear. The cargo was unloaded at Belfast. The cost to repair the vessel being too high, the vessel was sold to Irish ship breakers for £2,500 & it was scrapped in the third quarter of 1927.
