Description

An exquisite small English Oak Coffer, from the period of Elizabeth I, circa 1560-1580.

Coffers of a smaller scale are much rarer than their larger counterparts. The ease of placement and positioning within the home brings with it the increased risk of damage, making them particularly sought after in the right condition. The excellent condition of this piece, coupled with its age makes for a very desirable and collectable item of furniture.

The oak grain is superbly patinated throughout, showing signs of wear commensurate with the age, whilst still remaining a functional and very usable piece of furniture.

Across the front panel, a carved relief of geometric and interlinked arch patterns decorate the front, with very small flowers interspersed within the design. Notched and bevelled edges soften the overall appearance of the upper box section, which is raised up by bracket style feet, extending below each end of the chest.

Though non-functional, the original lock plate sits at the front of the chest, and grounds the overall appearance.

A fabulous addition to a period or even contemporary setting.
