Early nineteenth century stipple engraving of Admiral Charles Middleton Baron Barham by Charles Picart and David Robinson after Isaac Pocock.Published 25th May 1807.
Approx.64 x 42 cms.Modern maple frame size 86 cms x 63.
Condition good with only slight crease in floor area.

Sitter depicted whole length wearing robes his left hand resting on a plan of the Battle of Trafalgar and papers entitled "Digest of Civil Affairs of Navy".A warship at sea beyond.

Charles Middleton first Baron Barham 1726-1813, an admiral.Convoy service ,cruised West Indies ,1761.Comptroller of the Navy 1778-1790,created baronet 1781,MP.for Rochester 1784,rear admiral 1787,vice admiral 1793,,admiral 1795,,Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty 1794,first lord of the Admiralty 1805 and created Baron Barham 1805.
First Lord of the admiralty at the time of the Battle of Trafalgar.
Middleton was also an important figure in the campaign to abolish slavery.He was instrumental in persuading William Wilberforce to manage the campaign in parliament.His house became the de facto headquarters of the campaign.
