Description

Beautiful playful early 19th century French Empire or early Restauration period patinated and gilt bronze ormolu travelling inkwell in the form of Cupid in a barrel of grapes. Absolutely charming in its depiction of the winged cupid sitting holding a bunch of grapes in a vat full of grapes, symbolising love and wine or, perhaps, a love of wine. Probably the property of a the owner of a vineyard. Finely cast and chased with a great use of the contrasting bronze finishes. Original and complete interior elements. Rare item of which I have not seen another. French, circa 1820.
