Description

Very fine set of early 19th century Neoclassical carving cutlery in silver with superbly detailed rams head handles based on original Roman patera and very similar to terminals used on Empire period beds and tables. One small stamp to each handle which looks like a small object silver metal guarantee stamp for Paris 1798-1809. The blade is stamped 'Sparling' probably for the late 18th century English cutler Robert Sparling. His trade card from his premises in St James, Haymarket, London lists his skills thus 'Makes & Sells all sorts of Cutlers Ware, as Knives & Forks both for Table and Dezert with Hafts in Ivory, Wood or Horn, Silver and China, or any other curious handles. Mounted in the best Blades'. Well fitted associated box. Anglo French George III / Empire period, circa 1800.
