Description

Fine pair of mid 19th century Grand Tour patinated cabinet bronzes depicting the classical warriors Romulus and Titus Tatius after Jaques-Louis David’s ‘The Intervention of the Sabine Women’ painted in 1799 and now on permanent display in the Louvre in Paris. This great historical work of art was a must see on the Grand Tour of the 19th century. Produced in two sizes, this pair are the larger more detailed versions with a circular shield emblazoned with the wolf of Rome carried by Romulus. Good quality pair, defined casting and chasing, deep brown patination, presented on Sienna marble slab bases. France, circa 1850.
