Description

RARE George III solid mahogany butlers bottle or decanter carrier. Dovetailed construction with side carrying handle cut outs with a double reed mould both top and bottom. The top section with six large round cut outs, almost definitely for the early shape Georgian wine bottles. Inside you can see the original glue blocks round the edge and strengthening blocks across the two thin centre parts.

The base has four brass castors let in which are also absolutely original. I very carefully removed one of the screws to make sure and right enough they were the original hand cut Georgian screws the same as in hinges on pembroke tables and such like.

There are some age cracks to the top as can be seen and there are also a couple of small old repairs also to the top section otherwise this is exactly as it was made.

This type of carrier was used by the butler to carry and store wine from the cellars into the sideboard of the dining room ready for use during the meal.

The whole piece is a gorgeous original colour with great patination.
