Description

FINE early 19th century Georgian campaign writing box. Camphor-wood sides with callamander veneered front and amazing parquetry top with walnut and maplewood tambor.

The front of the piece is made as three drawers, the top two are dummies whilst the bottom one is a proper drawer and opens at the same time as the tambor opens, thus when the drawer is locked everything is locked. The drawer retains its original working lock and key.

The wonderful parquetry flap opens up once the shutter and drawer are open and rests on the open drawer revealing a fitted birds-eye maple wood veneered interior with two small drawers. The parquetry flap is in many various woods including rosewood, lignum, laburnum, burr yew, birds-eye maple and callamander.

The whole piece retains a wonderful rich colour and patination and is in very good order for its age.

One of the nicest campaign desks of this type I've seen, most are just plain teak or camphor-wood.
