Victorian Silver Sugar Shovel, H. Lias & Son, 1853
Description
This is a good quality Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Shovel in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoon is shaped as a small shovel or spade and would originally have been intended for use with soft brown sugar. The initials W W or possibly W S W are elegantly engraved at the top of the stem. The spoon is made in London by renowned silversmiths Henry Lias & Son and dates to 1853. The firm was founded by John Lias in 1791, who was joined by his son Henry in 1818. After John's death Henry snr was joined by his son Henry jnr to form Henry Lias & Son. The firm later became Wakely & Wheeler and remained in business until 1957.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 170 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar shovel is 14.3cm / 5.6ins long and weighs a very respectable 31.8g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter S for 1853, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the H L over H L makers' mark for Henry Lias & Son.
