Description
This is an elegant pair of George V Cut Glass Scent Bottles with Sterling Silver Collars. The bottles are shaped liked ship's decanters with broad spreading bases and long necks surmounted by conical stoppers. The bodies and stoppers are deep cut in a hobnail pattern whilst the silver collars are plain. The collars are hallmarked in Chester for silversmiths William Vale & Sons and date to around 1923. Founded in Birmingham by William Vale in the 1880s, the firm produced a wide range of principally smaller items for personal use and their mark is often seen on silver tops for scent bottles and dressing table pots. They remained in business up until the early 1930s.
Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the glass bottles or stoppers and just a couple of tiny dings in the silver collars, much as you would expect after nearly 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bottles stand 15.5cm / 6.1ins high and are 6.7cm / 2.6ins in diameter across the bases. The pair together weigh in at 403.5g / 14.2oz.
The hallmarks on the collars are quite rubbed but can just about be deciphered. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the W.V & S makers' mark for William Vale & Sons and most probably the date letter N for 1923.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bottles.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping coists to your country before making a purchase.
