Description

Here we have a stunning Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Pedestal Bowl from the Edwardian era. The bowl is roughly diamond shaped with a classic Art Nouveau lady with flowing hair at both ends of the diamond. The figures are joined by a sinuous ribbon around the rim whilst the body is pierced in an organic style. The pedestal base has a scalloped rim and fluted sides.

The bowl is made by silversmith Colen Hewer Cheshire and assayed in Chester in 1905. Colen Cheshire was actually a Birmingham silversmith whose firm was active between the mid-1860s and around 1930. This is an unusually large piece for his company who are most associated with cigar and cigarette boxes and smaller items for personal use.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced body and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bowl is 24.7cm / 9.7ins long, 16cm / 6.3ins across and stands 7.8cm / 3.1ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 220.1g / 7.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the upper rim are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter E for 1905 and the C.C makers' mark for Colen Hewer Cheshire. There is also a registered design number of 410346, which dates the original design to 1903/4.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bowl.
