Description

This is a smart cased set of six Vintage Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons in the revived Hanoverian pattern. The spoons are copies of an original from c.1701 and have the distinctive central rib down the stems and the long rat tail along the undersides of the bowls that are typical of Hanoverian spoons. It was the dominant style of spoons for most of the 18th century.

The coffee spoons are made in Sheffield by Francis Howard Ltd and date to 1970, which was the company's centenary year. Founded by Francis Howard after he left William Batt & Sons in 1870, the firm remains in business under the ownership of the Howard family to this day.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and only the bare minimum of superficial surface wear. They have clearly been well looked after for over 50 years. The outside of the box is a little scuffed but in overall good condition with both the hinges and the clasp in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 9.3cm / 3.7ins long and the set of six together, unboxed, weighs in at a very respectable 57.2g / 2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter C for 1970 and the FH within a circle makers' mark for Francis Howard Ltd.
