Victorian Silver Egg Spoon, Francis Higgins, 1861
Description
This is a good quality mid-Victorian Sterling Silver Egg Spoon in the classic Fiddle pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. Egg Spoons first appeared in the late 18th century and were common throughout the 19th century. They are the perfectly shaped spoon for tucking into a soft boiled egg at breakfast time. This spoon was made in London by renowned silversmith Francis Higgins and dates to 1861. There were at least three generations of Francis Higgins working as silversmiths in London in the 19th century. This piece is marked for Francis Higgins II, who was the manager of The Portland Co, a firm of specialist spoon makers, between 1859 and 1868.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after 160 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg spoon is 13cm / 5.1ins long and weighs a respectable 14.8g / 0.52oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter f for 1861, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the distinctive fh in a heart makers' mark for Francis Higgins II as manager of The Portland Co Ltd.
