Description

This is an elegant pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salts. The salts are in the Georgian Revival style, being navette shaped with reeded bodies on low pedestal feet. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The salts are made in Birmingham by Minshull & Latimer and date to 1895. Minshull & Latimer operated from premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter between around 1890 and 1910 producing a range of tableware and personal items.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the absolute minimal amount of superficial surface wear. These have clearly been well looked after for over 125 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each salt is 7.5cm / 2.9ins long, 4.5cm / 1.8ins wide and stands 3.3cm / 1.3ins high. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 44.8g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, just below the rim of each salt, are clear to read although both the makers' marks are a little distorted. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter v for 1895 and the M & L makers' mark for Minshull & Latimer.
