Description

This is a smart cased set of six Mid-Century Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons in the classic Old English Shell pattern, with each spoon having an embossed shell at the top of the stem. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The coffee spoons are made in Birmingham by J.B. Chatterley & Sons Ltd and date to 1957. John Bishop Chatterley founded his firm in the 1880s, later being joined by his sons. They manufactured in Birmingham and had a high end showroom in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district. They ceased trading in the mid-1990s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and only the most minimal superficial surface wear, which has to be expected after 65 years of good service. The box has a couple of very small scuff marks but is otherwise in good condition with both hinges and clasp in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 9.5cm / 3.7ins long and the set of six together, unboxed, weighs in at a respectable 48.5g / 1.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stems are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter H for 1957 and the J.B.C & S makers' mark for J.B. Chatterley & Sons Ltd.
