Description

This is a good quality set of five Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoons in the revived Hanoverian pattern. Hanoverian spoons have upturned ends to the stems and a rat tail along the back of the bowls, which goes back to when spoons were laid on the table bowl down, rather than bowl up as has been standard since the late 1700s. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The teaspoons are made by Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol and assayed in London in 1885/6. Josiah Williams & Co were one of the biggest manufacturing silversmiths in the country but as Bristol didn't have its own assay office their items had to be sent originally to Exeter and then, after that office closed in 1882, to London to be hallmarked.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 135 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 12.8cm / 5ins long and the set of five together weighs in at a substantial 91.8g / 3.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the narrow stems are necessarily small but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letters K for 1885 or L for 1886, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G.M.J makers' mark for George Maudley Jackson, the then head of Josiah Williams & Co.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoons.
