Description

This is a distinctive cased set of George VI Sterling Silver Teaspoons with Gothic style finials. The spoons are mostly plain with a raised edge on the upper side of the stem and the tapered arrowhead finial that harks back to medieval Gothic designs. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The teaspoons are made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Roberts & Belk and date to 1937, the first full year of George VI's reign. The firm traced its history back to the partnership of Furniss, Poles & Turner in 1810, becoming Roberts & Belk in 1863 before finally being bought out in 1961.

Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and just the most minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 85 years of use. The box has a couple of scuff marks on it but is in overall good condition with both the clasps and hinges in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each teaspoon is 10.3cm / 4ins long and the set of six together (unboxed) weighs in at a respectable 51.5g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the bowls are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter u for 1937 and the R&B makers' mark for Roberts & Belk. In addition, each spoon has the Aladdin's lamp trademark of Roberts & Belk stamped into the heel.
