Description

Here we have a very distinguished looking late Victorian Sterling Silver Sauce Boat in the Regency Revival style. It stands on three duck feet, has fluted decoration around the body and blank cartouches on either side. It has a scroll handle with feathered decoration.

The sauce boat is made in Birmingham by Thomas Hayes and dates to 1894. Thomas Hayes was active in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter between 1887 and the early 1900s producing a wide range of tableware, homeware and personal items.

Condition is very good with just a couple of very small dings in the cartouche on one side plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The sauce boat measures 15.2cm / 6ins from lip to handle, 8.5cm / 3.3ins across and stands 10.3cm / 4ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 160.4g / 5.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the side of the body are slightly distorted by the fluted design but still clear and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter u for 1894 and the T.H makers' mark for Thomas Hayes.
