Description

This is a good quality set of six George III Sterling Silver Teaspoons in the classic Old English pattern. Each teaspoon has a crest of a stag's head elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The teaspoons are made in London by William Sumner, with five of them dating to 1793 and one to 1787, so presumably a repeat order was placed some six years after the original set. William Sumner was in partnership with another fine spoon maker, Richard Crossley, from 1775 to 1782 before they decided to go their separate ways. Sumner remained in business right up until his death in 1807.

Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after around 230 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 13.2cm / 5.2ins long and the set of six together weighs in at a substantial 109.1g / 3.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the undersides of the stems are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letters s for 1793 and m for 1787, the George III duty mark and the W.S makers' mark for William Sumner.
