Description

This is a George IV Sterling Silver Mustard Spoon in the classic Fiddle pattern. The bowl of the spoon has been gilded to protect it from salt corrosion. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The mustard spoon is made in London by Joseph Read and dates to 1830, the last year of George IV's reign. Joseph Read was a specialist spoon maker who was active between around 1815 and the early 1830s. On the hallmarks register he is listed as Josephus Read but elsewhere just as Joseph Read.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just a little scratching in the bowl where it has been cleaned rather vigorously at some point in its life. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Georgian mustard pots were considerably larger than 20th and 21st century ones and this is a long mustard spoon at 12.9cm / 5.1ins. It weighs a respectable 14.4g / 0.51oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter p for 1830, the George IV duty mark and the JR makers' mark for Joseph(us) Read.
