Description

Here we have a pair of George V Sterling Silver Open Salts with black Bakelite liners. During the twenties and thirties many new materials were increasingly used in everyday objects. Bakelite was a good choice for lining salts as it would not get corroded by the salt and was also much less likely to get chipped or cracked than a glass liner and this pair of salts has stood the test of time very well.

The salts were made in Birmingham by Joseph Gloster Ltd and date to 1933. Joseph Gloster started his firm in the 1880s and they quickly established themselves producing a broad range of silverware. Becoming a limited company in 1901, they renmained in business up until the late 1970s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver and no damage to the bakelite liners, just the superficial surface wear on both that would expect after over 85 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salts are each 2.4cm / 0.9ins high and 4.5cm / 1.8ins in diameter across the top rims. The pair together weigh in at 34.4g / 1.2oz but this does include the bakelite liners which are fixed in place.

The hallmarks on the undersides of the bases are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter J for 1933 and the J.G.Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd. In addition, each rim is marked with the lion passant for Sterling Silver.
