Description

Here we have a top quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Tea Caddy. The caddy is broadly oval in shape with a bulbous body standing on four legs. The hinged lid has a gadrooned rim and there are handles on either side of the body and on the finial.

The tea caddy is made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and dates to 1908. Established by William Hutton in Birmingham in 1800, the firm moved to Sheffield in the 1830s and developed a reputation for producing a wide range of consistently high quality silverware. They remained under the leadership of the Hutton family until they were absorbed into James Dixon & Sons in 1930.

Condition is generally very good with just a small ding below the handle on the left and another in the base. It stands securely on its four feet and the hinge is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tea caddy is 10cm / 3.9ins wide, 6.6cm / 2.6ins deep and stands 8cm / 3.1ins high. It weighs a substantial 155.9g / 5.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the front of the body are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter q for 1908 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd. In addition, all three handles and the inside of the lid have the lion passant for Sterling Silver and the William Hutton & Sons makers' mark.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tea caddy.
