Description

This is a stylish George V Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker of urn shape with a stepped base and lid and a band of lozenge decoration around the top rim. It is just starting to show the elements of Art Deco design that would come to dominate the 1920s and 1930s.

The pepper shaker is made in Birmingham in 1920 by noted silversmiths Joseph Gloster Ltd. Founded by Joseph Gloster in the 1880s, the firm was based at the Lion Silver Works in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. They were a highly successful company, remaining in business up until the late 1970s.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear and a few little salt spots that have to be expected after 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pepper shaker is 8.2cm / 3.2ins high and 3.7cm / 1.5ins in diameter at its widest point. It weighs a very respectable 42.8g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the side of the body are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter v for 1920 and the J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
