Description

This is a fine quality pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Pepper Shakers bearing a Bull or Ox crest. The pepper shakers are of baluster form with swirled reeded bases and deep fluted lids.

The pepper shakers are made in Birmingham by world famous English silversmiths Mappin & Webb and date to 1904. Although Mappin & Webb were based in Sheffield, they did also commission pieces from Birmingham that had to comply with their very high standards.

Condition is good with no dings or dents in the body, just a little misshaping around the top rim where the lids are regularly removed and reinserted to fill up the shakers. The lids nevertheless fit securely into the necks of the shakers. There are a few salt spots around the bottom rims of the bases. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pepper shakers are 7cm / 2.8ins high and 3cm / 1.2ins in diameter at their widest point. The pair together weigh a respectable 35.2g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the sides of the bodies are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter e for 1904 and the Mn Wb in a shield makers' mark for Mappin & Webb.
