Description

Here we have a fine George V Glass Hip Flask with a Sterling Silver lid and drinking cup, both of which have gilt interiors. The glass flask has a smooth lower section, which fits into the silver cup, whilst the upper section is slice cut around the body and across the shoulders. The inside of the cap is filled with cork to reduce any leaks and the top is decorated with engine turned stripes and a blank cartouche, making this ideal as a gift.

The hip flask is made in London by Ernest Drew with the cup dated for 1921 and the lid and collar dated for 1922. Not a great deal is known about Ernest Drew except that he worked through the 1920s and seems to have specialised in hip flasks as these are virtually the only items found with his mark on them. He certainly he made fine quality ones as this example proves.

Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the glass and no dings or dents in the silver, just a little surface wear to the outside of the cup, which is to be expected in an item carried in a pocket with other bits and pieces. The gilding inside the cup and around the neck of the flask is also in fine condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The flask stands 14cm / 5.5ins high and is 7.5cm / 2.9ins across. It weighs 377.4g / 13.3oz. It is ideal for a jacket pocket or handbag.

The hallmarks, on the side of the collar and the side of the cup, are a little rubbed but still able to be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1921 on the cup and g for 1922 on the collar plus the E.D makers' mark for Ernest Drew.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the hip flask.
