Description

This is a fine quality Mid-Century Sterling Silver Mustard Spoon in the traditional Old English pattern. The spoon has a Gothic initial H elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

This mustard spoon is much larger than was normal in the 1950s by which time mustard pots and spoons had greatly reduced in size. Together with the Gothic style of the engraving, this suggests that it was possibly made to replace a missing spoon to go with an older and larger mustard pot, probably Victorian.

The mustard spoon is made in Sheffield by the long established silversmiths Atkin Brothers and dates to 1952. It bears the Elizabeth II coronation mark which was approved for use in 1952 & 1953 only.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 70 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 9.5cm / 3.7ins long and weighs a respectable 8.6g / 0.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter K for 1952, the Elizabeth II coronation mark and the HA makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
