Description

This is a Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoon has a letter C elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The spoon is made by James & Josiah Williams (later Josiah Williams & Co) in Bristol and assayed in Exeter in 1857. Bristol didn't have its own assay office so. like many West Country businesses, James & Josiah Williams sent their pieces to Exeter to be assayed. After the closure of the Exeter office in 1882, the firm sent its pieces to London.

The spoon has seen some use and the tip has become rounded after stirring many cups of tea over its over 160 year lifespan! Other than that there is only the superficial surface wear that you would expect after this period of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The teaspoon is 13.8cm / 5.4ins long and weighs a very respectable 17.3g / 0.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter A for 1857, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JW & JW makers' mark for James & Josiah Williams.
