George VI Silver Sugar Spoon, T. Bradbury, 1939
Description
This is a high quality George VI Sterling Silver Sugar Spoon in the revived Seal Top design. Seal Top spoons originated in the early 17th century but were revived in the 20th century and were particularly popular in the interwar years. They are unusual in that the assay office mark is traditionally struck separately in the bowl of the spoon, with the other hallmarks being on the underside of the stem. The sugar spoon is well made in a good heavy gauge of silver by Thomas Bradbury & Sons and assayed in London in 1939. Although based in Sheffield, much of Thomas Bradbury & Sons work was assayed in London, particularly the more prestigious pieces. Founded in 1736, they became Thomas Bradbury & Son in 1831 and finally went out of business in 1943.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 80 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 12.7cm / 5ins long and weighs in at a substantial 32.0g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are nice and clear to read. In the bowl is the leopard's head assay mark for London, whilst on the stem is the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the date letter D for 1939 and the TB & S makers' mark for Thomas Bradbury & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
