Here we have a top quality, large and heavy, early Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The letter S is stylishly engraved at the top of the stem.

The teaspoon is made by Robert Williams in Bristol and assayed in Exeter in 1839. Robert Williams was the original founder of the famous Bristol silversmiths Josiah Williams & Co. Robert took over the business of William Woodman in the late 1830s and renamed it first Robert Williams, then Robert Williams & Sons when his sons James & Josiah joined the firm in the mid-1840s. It would be Josiah's name that ultimately became fixed as the company name from the 1870s onwards.

Condition is good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 180 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 14.7cm / 5.8ins long and weighs a substantial 30.0g / 1.06oz, a very considerable weight for a teaspoon.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the Gothic date letter C for 1839, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the RW makers' mark for Robert Williams.
