Description

This is an attractive George V Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish standing on three curled legs. The lower part of the body is round with long piercing, whilst the upper part is scalloped with shorter piercing and a gadrooned rim with a cross pattern in it.

Originally intended to hold wrapped sweets, today this could be used for sweets, nuts or snacks, on a dressing table or on a desk.

The bonbon dish is made by or for Johnson, Walker & Tolhurst in Birmingham in 1912. Founded in 1849 in the City of London, Johnson, Walker & Tolhurst were high end retail goldsmiths, silversmiths and jewellers with their original premises in Aldersgate Street. After the First World War they moved into London's West End and until very recently were trading in the famous Burlington Arcade on Piccadilly.

Condition is very good with the only point being that one leg is slightly pushed in. However it still stands perfectly securely on a flat surface with no rocking. The delicate pierced work on the sides of the body have no damage. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bonbon dish is 12cm / 4.7ins in diameter and stands 4.5cm / 1.8ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 55.9g / 1.97oz, which gives an indication of its quality given how much of the body is pierced.

The underside of the dish has the hallmarks, which are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter n for 1912 and the JW&T in a diamond sponsors' mark for Johnson, Walker & Tolhurst Ltd. In addition, the base has the retail mark for Johnson , Walker & Tolhurst Ltd, 80 Aldersgate Street, E.C. and the registered design number 591393 which dates the original design of the dish to 1911/12.
