Description

This is a good quality pair of large Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the classic Fiddle pattern. The tongs have the initials JH elegantly engraved on the outside of the curve.

The sugar tongs are made in Bristol by Josiah Williams & Co and assayed in Exeter in 1875. Josiah Williams & Co were a hugely successful silver firm founded in Bristol around 1818. Because Bristol didn't have its own assay office they sent the wares to Exeter to be assayed until that office closed in 1883, when they switched to the London assay office. Due to the office closing in 1883, Exeter silver is much sought after by collectors.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 145 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tongs are 13.1cm / 5.1ins long and weigh in at a substantial 31.1g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks are crisp and clear to read. On the inside of one arm are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter T for 1875 and the Queen Victoria duty mark. On the inside of the other arm is the J.W & Co makers' mark for Josiah Williams & Co.
