Description

This is a charming Mid-Century Sterling Silver Open Salt with its original Blue Glass Liner. It is a round pot of bulbous form. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The salt is made in Birmingham by silversmiths Joseph Gloster Ltd and dates to 1956. Joseph Gloster founded his firm in the 1880s and they remained in business for nearly a century until the 1970s. They made a wide range of silver items of consistently good quality.

Condition is good with no dings or dents and just a small amount of salt corrosion around the inside of the rim. There are no chips or cracks in the blue glass liner. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt is 2.4cm / 0.9ins high and 3.8cm / 1.5ins in diameter at its widest part. Without the blue glass liner, it weighs in at 14.5g / 0.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the base are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for London, the date letter G for 1956 and the J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
