Description

This is a very striking set of three small George V Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons. The spoon stems are shaped as Corinithian columns with vertical lines topped by acanthus leaves. The spoons are the perfect size for small espresso cups but would be too small for a larger tea cup or mug.

The coffee spoons are made by Josiah Williams & Co and assayed in London in 1935. Based in Bristol from around 1818 until their closure in 1940, Josiah Williams & Co was the largest British silversmiths outside of London, Birmingham and Sheffield. As Bristol did not have an assay office, the firms product was sent to Exeter, until it closed in 1882 and then to London for hallmarking.

Condition of the three spoons is very good with no dings, dents or damage and only the most minimal of surface wear. They have clearly been well looked after for the last 85 years! Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The coffee spoons are each 8.2cm / 3.2ins long and the set of three together weighs in at a respectable 22.8g / 0.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the bowls, are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter u for 1935 and the J.W & Co makers' mark for Josiah Williams & Co.
