Description

This is a good quality large Dutch 934 Silver Caddy Spoon. The spoon is in the traditional Dutch style of a shallow ladle. The bowl is decorated with a rural scene featuring a windmill by a river and has a crimped edge. The upper part of the stem has a triangular plate with foliate design and a blank cartouche, whilst the finial is shaped as the Dutch lion rampant, symbol of the royal House of Orange.

The spoon is made by the brothers S & H Reitsma in the city of Sneek and assayed in nearby Leeuwarden in 1899. It has then been imported into the UK by Samuel Boyce Landeck and assayed as an import in Sheffield, still in 1899. The Reitsma brothers were descendants of earlier silversmiths and worked in Sneek from 1892 to 1949. The spoon has full sets of both Dutch and English hallmarks.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The caddy spoon is 11.7cm / 4.6ins long and 6.2cm / 2.4ins across the bowl. It weighs a very respectable 30g / 1.05oz.

Both the Dutch and English hallmarks are nice and clear to read. As is normal, the Dutch hallmarks are spread around the spoon. On the back of the stem are the lion rampant with a number 1 for 934 grade silver (93.4% pure as against 92.5% for Sterling). This mark is broken on the edge by a key, which means it is an export piece. Above the lion is the R below a hammer, which is the makers' mark for the brothers S & H Reitsma. Just below the cartouche is the Minerva head with a letter F on the helmet, the assay mark for Leeuwarden and just below the lion finial is the date letter P for 1899. The English hallmarks are on the inside of the bowl and show the lion passant for Sterling Silver or higher, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter g for 1899, the stamp F for foreign (ie it is an import) and the S.B.L sponsor's mark for the importer Samuel Boyce Landeck.
