Description
Here we have a top quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Serving Dish in the shape of a scallop shell or a large leaf, we can't quite decide which! It has the flowing organic style typical of the Art Nouveau period in which it was made. These dishes were originally mostly used for serving butter but nowadays they are also great for nuts or snacks, for sauces or condiments on the dining table, for jewellery or accessories on a dressing table or for small stationery items on a desk.
The dish is made in Birmingham by Deakin & Francis in 1895 and retailed by Mappin & Webb, probably in their prestigious London store. Although Mappin & Webb made their own silverware, they also frequently commissioned items for their store from other high quality manufacturers such as Deakin & Francis.
Overall condition is good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of faithful service. It stands securely on its 3 ball feet with no rocking. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 14.1cm / 5.5ins from top to bottom, 12.5cm / 4.9ins across and stands 2.6cm / 1in high. It weighs a substantial 91.1g / 3.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the shell are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the Gothic date letter v for 1895 and the D & F makers' mark for Deakin & Francis. In addition it has the retail stamp for Mappin & Webb.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the dish.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
