Description

Here we have a very striking Mid-Century Norwegian 830 Silver Caddy Spoon with a gilded leaf decoration. Typically of mid-century Scandinavian design it combines a simple form with elegant style. Above the leaf shaped bowl is a barley twist stem, which loops to form a finger ring and is capped by a ball finial to which is attached a small gilded leaf.

The caddy spoon is made in Voss, Norway by the firm Sylvsmidja and dates to around the 1950s / 60s. Sylvsmidja was established in Voss in 1940 by husband & wife Leif & Betzy Johannessen just as Norway was invaded by Nazi Germany. Despite this, the company thrived after the war and is today regarded as the foremost makers of "bunad" silver, the traditional ornamentation of Norwegian national dress.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the minimal surface wear you would expect after many years of use. The gilding on the leaf has become quite rubbed on one side. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 13.2cm / 5.2ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 21.1g / 0.74oz.

The underside of the stem is stamped 830S for 830 / 1000 grade silver, the historic Norwegian silver standard and has the "J" shaped drinking horn mark for Sylvsmidja.
