Description
Here we have a good quality pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the traditional Fiddle pattern. There is no additional decoration with the exception of the initials PMH elegantly engraved on the outside of the hinge of the tongs. The sugar tongs are made by William Pope of Plymouth and assayed in Exeter in 1856. With a tradition of silver work going back to at least the Middle Ages, the city of Exeter had its assay office formally established in 1701. It was the principal assay office for the whole of South West England up until its closure in 1883. William Pope was a specialist spoon and flatware maker active in Plymouth between around 1830 and the 1860s.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 165 years of service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar tongs are 14.1cm / 5.6ins long and weigh in at a very respectable 32.8g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the Gothic date letter U for 1856, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the WP makers' mark for William Pope.
