Description

This is a good quality George III Sterling Silver Shell Teaspoon. This is basically in the Old English pattern but instead of the plain bowl there is a shell shaped one. These were very popular in the late 18th and early 19th century. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The teaspoon is made in London by Thomas Johnson and dates to 1811. This is the earliest of three silversmiths called Thomas Johnson who were registered in London in the 19th century. This Thomas was principally a spoon maker and was active between around 1800 and 1820.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the minimal surface wear that has to be expected after 210 years of use! Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The teaspoon is 13cm / 5.1ins long and weighs a respectable 12.6g / 0.44oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter Q for 1811, the George III duty mark and the TJ makers\' mark for Thomas Johnson.
