Description

Here we have a Cased Set of 6 George VI Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons in the traditional Old English pattern. These spoons perfectly capture a moment in time right at the end of the Second World War. Silver was still very much a restricted material and hard to come by and these coffee spoons are very delicately made from the available resources. They would still have represented a costly purchase and may perhaps have been given as a wedding present for a young couple setting up their first home.

The spoons are made by A.J. Bailey in Birmingham and dated for 1945. A.J. Bailey were a well established firm of silversmiths who operated from the Everest Works in Birmingham between 1898 and 1976, primarily producing tableware. During the war years they would have been involved in production for the national war effort and were no doubt pleased to be back at their regular work.

The coffee spoons are in very good condition with no dings or dents and only the minimal surface wear that you would expect after 75 years of use. The box is in good condition, although the colour of the velvet tray for the spoons has faded over the course of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoons are each 9.8cm / 3.8ins long and the set of 6 (unboxed) weighs in at 31.7g / 1.11oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the bowls are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter V for 1945 and the A.J.B makers' mark for A.J. Bailey.
